Hederman Cancer Center
The Hederman Cancer Center , opened in the spring of 2002, is a state-of-the-art facility that provides cancer patients single-door access to all the resources of Baptist Cancer Services. Designed to address the cancer patient's need of easy access and convenience, this three-story center is connected to Baptist's Radiation Oncology Department and the Colonnades Medical Office Building. This allows a seamless connection between all diagnostic, interventional and support services available to patients in every stage of treatment. :: Click here to tour the Hederman Cancer Center.
Services within the Hederman Cancer Center include
- The Center Navigator assesses the needs of both patients and caregivers; directs them to appropriate support services; and educates patients and caregivers on any issues related to a patient's diagnosis. The Navigator also coordinates all cancer support groups and activities. Designated to serve as the center's single point of contact for patients and caregivers, the Navigator's purpose is to make it easy for patients and their families to access services and information.
- A Cancer Resource Library is available for cancer patients, family members and members of the community to find information on cancer diagnosis, treatment and screenings. Resource materials and Internet access open up a world of information for fact-finding and research.
- Meal planning, food preparation, special diets and menu selections are extremely important to patients undergoing treatment for cancer. The center's Nutrition Specialist is available to help patients, friends and family with the special dietary needs of cancer patients.
- Baptist's Pastoral Care department provides spiritual support and emotional care through counseling, prayer and worship opportunities for patients and family members.
- Cancer Support Groups meet monthly in the center and provide a source for information and encouragement for patients and family members. The "Positive Ones" breast cancer support group; "Us Too" prostate cancer support group; "Walking Forward" gyn cancer support group and "HOPE" support group for patients with any kind of cancer diagnosis all help patients learn coping skills in a caring atmosphere with others sharing their experience.
- For patients struggling with conditions that affect their appearance, the importance of feeling confident about their appearance is heightened. Appearances, Baptist's retail boutique, specializes in hats, wigs, scarves, prosthetic bras and other products for cancer patients. It is located on the ground floor of the center.
- The Activities Room focuses on therapy for cancer patients. Art therapy is offered, along with physical activities, such as deep breathing and stretching exercises, to help patients work through their diagnoses.
- The Serenity Garden, located directly outside the Hederman Cancer Center, offers a private, secluded area where cancer patients and their families can enjoy peace and quiet, fresh air and a place to "escape." The Serenity Garden features winding pathways and comfortable seating near a water fountain where they can relax to the sounds of trickling water.
- The Protect & Detect Cancer Screenings are part of the center's mission to reduce the impact of cancer in our community. The screenings, available to all adults, are designed to detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage, and to reduce a person's risk of developing cancer by providing education on ways to reduce risk factors. The program provides a certified family nurse practitioner specially trained to work with participants to complete a health history and lifestyle assessment. Screenings, which include examination of the neck, lungs, lymph nodes and skin--along with gender- and age-specific screenings and lab work--cost only $25 and are available at the center.

"But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:21-23
Renowned local artisan Gail Pittman has produced the "Hope" pattern for the exclusive use of Baptist Cancer Services. These pieces, available for purchase in the Hederman Cancer Center, feature brightly colored flowers on a vibrant green vine that capture the spirit of hope that daily renews the patients and staff at Baptist Cancer Services. Pieces in the "Hope" design are available through contributions to Baptist Cancer Services. The first piece in the "Hope" pattern was given to former President George H. W. Bush and Mrs. Bush on May 5, 2003, during a luncheon sponsored by Baptist to kick off the Campaign for Baptist Cancer Services. The piece was given in recognition and gratitude for their efforts in cancer awareness, treatment and research. Sales from the "Hope" pattern are used to fund special projects and needs of cancer patients for which other resources are not designated. To purchase pieces in the "Hope" pattern, please call 601-968-1248.
