Childhood Obesity: Don’t Turn Your Head on the Problem
January 10, 9:30 a.m. to Noon
If you are concerned your child is headed toward an unhealthy weight, now is the time to take action. Bring your child to this fun, family-friendly morning of learning how to eat right, get moving, and get healthy. Speakers include Chef Luis Bruno, pediatrician Julia Sherwood, M.D., and Amy Dent, R.D., of the Baptist Nutrition Center. Additionally, exercise physiologists at the Healthplex will work with the kids on exercising.

The Nuts and Bolts of Heart Disease
January 13, 11: 45 a.m.
At this free seminar, you will learn about the many different areas of personal risk in the area of heart disease. Cardiologist Dr. William Harper will give a brief overview of commonly misunderstood concepts will be discussed. There will be ample time to ask that lingering question about something that you have heard or read in the area of cardiac issues. The cadence will be quick, broad, factual, and fun.

Class for Expectant Grandparents
January 14, 6 p.m.
Expectant grandparents can prepare for their new roles with Baptist Medical Center's Grandparenting Class. The session covers changes in labor and delivery and the focus on family-centered maternity care. The agenda also includes a refresher on baby feeding and safety and a discussion of basic diplomacy for the newly extended family.

RSV and Flu
January 15, 6 p.m.
Winter can be a tough season for children, especially with nasty viruses such as flu and RSV floating around. Join pediatrician Dennis Rowlen, M.D., to learn how to prevent your child from becoming ill, how to manage symptoms, and when to see the doctor. This seminar is for parents and childcare providers.

Super Sitters Baby Sitting Class
Dates for 2009 are March 7, June 20, July 31, and October 24.
Baptist Medical Center hosts the popular “Super Sitters” class four times a year. The class, which teaches essential babysitting skills, is recommended for ages 11 to 15 years of age. The class is held on Saturdays and lasts from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $45 which includes books, boxed lunch and snack.

Baptist Offers Free Cancer Rehab Classes
Baptist's Cancer Rehab Program is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. every week at no cost in the Activity Room of the Hederman Cancer Center, 1227 North State Street, Jackson, Miss. To register, call the Baptist Health Line at 1-800-948-6262 or 601-948-6262. The class helps cancer patients enhance cardiovascular strength and endurance and immune system and bone density. It helps to increase overall strength and stamina, decrease fatigue, weight loss and improve digestion.
Baptist Hosts Free Creative Arts Program for Cancer Patients
Baptist Cancer Services offers a creative arts program, including knitting, and art therapy for cancer patients at no cost. All events take place in the Hederman Cancer Center. Call the Baptist Health Line to register at 1-800-948-6262 or 601-948-6262.

Marvelous Multiples Childbirth Classes
January 8, 6:30 p.m.
To help parents-to-be of twins and other multiples, Baptist offers four-week session Marvelous Multiples childbirth classes for parents delivering at any hospital. The prenatal education provided offers instruction on pregnancy, nutritional needs, relaxation techniques, birth and emotional aspects of having multiples. This is the only multiple birthclass offered in Mississippi.
New Sessions start January 8, March 5, May 7, July 9 and September 3, 2009.

Safety is No Accident: CPR for Infants
Each Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Baptist’s Nutrition Center offers “Way to Go Kids®” Weight Loss Program.
Wednesdays, 3:45 p.m.
(A new four-week session begins the first Wednesday of each month.)
Way to Go Kids® is a four-week program designed to help overweight and under-active kids build lifelong, healthy attitudes about food and fitness. New sessions begin the first Wednesday of each month from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. Pre-registration is required. For more information and cost, call 601-973-1624.
EnerGym Fitness Program for Kids
Begins January 12. Call for specific dates and times.
Using specifically designed KidzPower resistance equipment, this six-week class offers a comprehensive, instructor-led fitness program for children ages 6 to 12. These fun-filled classes combine music with resistance training and aerobic exercises to stimulate your child’s interest in a healthy physical lifestyle.

Binge Eating Workshop
Call for Dates and Times
The Nutrition Center offers a program that can help break the harmful cycle of binge eating. Licensed, professional counselors help binge eaters discover the hidden causes behind their eating patterns and give practical guidance to help them gain control of their eating habits.
