More Than 100 Cancer Survivors Celebrate Life Contact: Robby Channell, 601-968-5135 rchannell@mbhs.org Jackson, Miss. – June 5, 2008 – Each year, Baptist Cancer Services hosts Cancer Survivors Day. On Sunday, June 1, 2008 more than 100 cancer survivors filled Baptist Medical Center to celebrate the 21st annual National Cancer Survivors Day. While 13,400 people in Mississippi are diagnosed with cancer each year, hospital spokesman Robby Channel said the event celebrates the victories. "Even though some battles with the disease might not be over, cancer victims are living proof that a diagnosis of cancer is no longer a certain death sentence," he said. During the event, audience members heard stories from survivors including author Kristi Brown of Starkville and singing from Judy Rhodes Davis. It was emceed by WLBT Anchor and Reporter Cheryl Lasseter. Brown, whose book To Walk on Fertile Ground documents her experiences dealing with gestational trophoblastic disease, has been free for four years from the cancer that attacks the uterus. "Because we are survivors, people automatically look to us as inspiration," Brown said. "I think we can change a person's life if we reach out to them and be that strength regardless of the circumstances." |
