Jackson, Miss. - January 8, 2004-- The Mississippi Quality Awards (MQA) program, administered through the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges in Jackson, has announced the results of its 2003 program year.

While there are a total of 11 winners, two Mississippi organizations are being recognized as outstanding examples of performance excellence and quality management in the state of Mississippi, deploying "World Class" processes that serve as role models for others. Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson and Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems in Forest, MS are this year's winners of the Governor's award, which will be presented in March 2004.

"Organizations recognized at this highest level have demonstrated management excellence with superior results and excellent systems," explained Duane Hamill, Director of the Mississippi Quality Awards Program.

"Our vision at Baptist Medical Center is to be the First Choice for Healthcare in Mississippi for patients, physicians and employees. In order for us to achieve our vision, it is imperative that we provide outstanding quality in all areas. We are proud to receive this recognition in confirmation of our hard work," said Kurt W. Metzner, President and CEO Baptist Health Systems.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems (SAS), Consolidated Manufacturing Center (CMC) assembles, integrates and tests defense electronics for air and land combat radar systems and radio production programs. Their vision is "To be Raytheon Company's premier CMC and our customer's first choice for the production, integration and test of today's and tomorrow's technology."

An offshoot of the Workforce in Education Act of 1994, administered through the Community and Junior College system, the Quality Awards Program is designed so that participating organizations can work --through a multi-level program that emphasizes a customer and quality focus --to become a world class quality organization. The process of evaluating and recognizing organizations is accomplished through teams of volunteer examiners and judges from businesses, industries and health care organizations throughout Mississippi, and utilizes the prestigious Baldrige National Quality Program Criteria for Performance Excellence to determine award levels.

"Organizations that participate in the Quality Awards program do so for more than the recognition of the award," Hamill said. "Equally important to these companies is the opportunity to grow, learn and develop. Marking their progress toward obtaining performance excellence, eleven other organizations will be receiving awards -- The Excellence Award, The Quality Commitment Award, and The Quality Interest Award ."

The Excellence Award recognizes organizations for demonstrating significant achievement in building effective, systematic processes and results oriented measurement systems that will lead to superior results, while the Quality Commitment Award is provided to organizations who are benefiting from the knowledge and skills gained in their quality improvement program and have developed a solid approach to system-level quality management. At the first level of recognition, the Quality Alignment Award is given to organizations that are aligning their systems and processes with quality improvement and performance management concepts.

According to Hamill, the Quality Awards program is open to organizations of all sizes that wish to learn, grow, and develop through a structured, externally validated self-assessment process. "Quality awards are typically related to industry," Hamill said, "however, concepts and methods such as promoting the roles of each individual in providing customer satisfaction is not limited to industries. These ideas are applicable to small businesses, service providers, education, health care, and government agencies. An organization with quality principles is one that is striving toward achieving performance excellence, not just one that produces a particular product."

Also, Business and education organizations can receive recognition during the Mississippi Quality Awards ceremony by applying for the Governor's Achievement Awards. The Governor's achievement awards provide recognition for Mississippi businesses and Educational institutions that have experienced recent breakthrough achievement and/or improvement in those areas of financial and market results or in student learning results, which are important to them and to the state of Mississippi.
