Jackson, MS - April 20, 2004 - The American Lung Association of Mississippi (ALAM), along with Baptist Health Systems and the Mississippi Asthma Collaborative, will hold its 5th annual asthma summer camp the week of July 12-16. Camp Wheez-Away will be held in Gallman and is for Mississippi children diagnosed with asthma.

Camp Wheez-Away is designed to provide a complete summer camp experience for children with asthma. Kids who attend the camp are treated to a variety of fun activities such as canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, and a ropes course. Children also are able to form friendships with other kids facing the same challenges they are.

"Asthma affects one in ten children," said Kay Hullings, executive director of ALAM. "It's important that children who struggle with this disease know they are not alone and that they can have fun at camp too. Camp Wheez-Away gives them that opportunity."

Not only do kids experience normal camp activities, several volunteer doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists also monitor them. They learn the importance of managing their asthma, recognizing their potential asthma triggers.

The American Lung Association is currently accepting applications for campers and volunteers. If you or your child want to become involved in Camp Wheez-Away this summer, call 1-800-586-4872 or visit the website at www.campwheezaway.com.
