Baptist Vascular Surgeons Listed in Money Magazine Special Fall Issue

Jackson, Miss. - October 24, 2003 -- Vascular surgeons Charles O'Mara, M.D. and Thomas Kilgore, M.D. with Baptist Medical Center in Jackson are the only physicians in Mississippi to be named in Money magazine's special Fall 2003 report, "America's Top Hospitals - The Best Healthcare for Your Family."

Measures of health care quality were used by Money magazin e to establish a list of the top-rated hospitals across the country that handle the most cases for 20 common medical conditions. One of the treatable conditions cited in the article is carotid artery disease, a condition in which plaque in the carotid artery, located in the neck, blocks blood flow to the brain and can cause a stroke. Surgery to remove the plaque, called carotid endarterectomy, is effective in decreasing the risk of stroke. Dr. O'Mara and Dr. Kilgore earned a spot on the list for their results in performing this surgery.

Both surgeons state that this accomplishment is the result of a team approach. "The combined teams at Baptist Hospital and The Cardiovascular Surgical Clinic have dedicated the resources and energies necessary to provide high quality health care for patients with carotid disease, and the magazine article recognizes all involved in this team effort."
